Role Overview
We are looking for a Managing Editor to oversee the day-to-day newsroom operations at The Meridiem. Working closely with the Editor-in-Chief, you will execute the editorial vision by managing editorial workflow, assigning stories, and ensuring our team of editors and reporters delivers high-quality content on time. You will be the operational backbone of the newsroom, coordinating across morning briefings, evening analysis, and breaking news coverage.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee day-to-day newsroom operations, ensuring smooth and efficient editorial workflow from pitch to publication.
- Assign stories to editors and reporters, balancing workload and matching talent to coverage areas.
- Work closely with the Editor-in-Chief to translate editorial vision into daily execution and content planning.
- Manage and mentor editors and reporters, setting clear expectations for deadlines, quality, and journalistic standards.
- Coordinate content production across morning briefings, evening analysis, breaking news, and long-form features.
- Review and approve content for publication, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and adherence to The Meridiem's editorial standards.
- Manage the editorial calendar, tracking story progress and ensuring consistent output across all verticals.
- Identify and resolve bottlenecks in the editorial process, continuously improving newsroom efficiency.
- Facilitate editorial meetings, story planning sessions, and post-publication reviews.
- Collaborate with the product and growth teams on content distribution and audience engagement strategies.
- Step in to edit or write content as needed during high-volume news cycles.
- Assist in recruiting, onboarding, and training new editorial team members.
Requirements
- 6+ years of experience in journalism, with at least 2 years in editorial management (managing editor, deputy editor, or similar role).
- Strong understanding of the technology landscape, including AI, startups, venture capital, cybersecurity, and enterprise tech.
- Proven experience managing editorial teams and workflows in a fast-paced news environment.
- Excellent editing skills with a keen eye for accuracy, structure, and narrative quality.
- Strong organizational and project management abilities — comfortable juggling multiple deadlines and priorities simultaneously.
- Experience coordinating breaking news coverage and making rapid editorial decisions.
- Effective communicator and team leader who can motivate and develop editorial talent.
- Commitment to journalistic ethics, independence, and accuracy.
Nice-to-Have
- Experience in digital-first or newsletter-based publications.
- Familiarity with CMS platforms, editorial workflow tools, and publishing pipelines.
- Background in technology journalism or tech industry coverage.
- Experience with audience analytics and data-informed editorial decisions.
- Experience managing freelance contributor networks.
- Familiarity with SEO best practices for digital journalism.
