Role Overview

As a Copy Editor at The Meridiem, you will serve as the final line of defense for editorial quality across all published content. You will review and edit articles for grammar, style, accuracy, and clarity, maintain and enforce our style guide, and fact-check claims, data, and attributions. Working across the daily news cycle under tight deadlines, you will ensure every piece of content that reaches our subscribers meets the highest standards of journalistic quality.

Key Responsibilities

• Review and edit all content for grammar, style, accuracy, and clarity before publication
• Maintain and enforce The Meridiem's editorial style guide
• Fact-check claims, data points, statistics, and attributions in articles
• Ensure headlines, subheads, and metadata are optimized for clarity and SEO
• Work under tight deadlines across the daily news cycle, including morning briefings and evening analysis
• Collaborate with reporters and editors to improve story structure, readability, and tone
• Flag potential legal, ethical, or factual concerns in copy before publication
• Ensure consistency in voice, terminology, and formatting across all content verticals
• Proofread newsletters, social media copy, and other editorial outputs as needed
• Contribute to the ongoing development and refinement of the editorial style guide

Requirements

• 3+ years of professional copy editing experience, preferably in journalism or digital media
• Exceptional command of grammar, punctuation, and English language usage
• Strong fact-checking skills and attention to detail
• Experience working under deadline pressure in a daily or breaking news environment
• Familiarity with AP style or similar editorial style guides
• Ability to edit for clarity, concision, and audience without losing the writer's voice
• Knowledge of SEO best practices for headlines, metadata, and web content
• Comfort working in a remote-first, async environment
• Strong communication skills for providing constructive feedback to writers

Nice-to-Have

• Experience editing technology, business, or financial content
• Familiarity with content management systems (Strapi, WordPress, or similar)
• Background in digital-first or newsletter-driven media
• Experience developing or maintaining an editorial style guide
• Knowledge of accessibility best practices in digital publishing
• Familiarity with common technology industry terminology and acronyms
